He is standing on a nearby rooftop with his goons. She knows it’s her rival, Renault (Peter Dinklage) who likes to think of himself as a samurai Michelle notes that when she first met him, he was Reynold.
Inside is a cell phone it rings, revealing a photo of a samurai. Michelle goes up to the rooftop of the building with her assistant, Claire (Kristen Bell), to board a helicopter from a helipad. She also points out that she is 47 th richest woman in the world despite not having a family. She then talks to the audience, referencing her many self-help books on how to get rich and tells the crowd that if they have family in their life, they should just push them away because they just hold you back. She is lowered from the stage on a mechanical phoenix and begins to do a (rather impressive) hip-hop dance number with T-Pain and shirtless male dancers. An amphitheater is filled to the brim with fans of Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy), all grown up. The nun tries to give encouragement but the teenaged girl tells her she doesn’t need anybody in her life she is fine being alone. She is dropped off by her adopted family and tells them “Fuck you,” flipping them off as they drive away. Now, in 1985, the young girl is now a teenager.
A now ten-year-old girl (played by Melissa McCarthy’s oldest daughter) is dropped off by her recent adopted family she asks why nobody wants her. The nun in charge tells her there will be another family that will connect with her. A five-year-old girl is dropped off at an orphanage by the family that adopted her. Boss Level could learn a thing or two from its leading man.We are told it’s 1975. Time and again, Grillo surprises and delights, no matter the creative or financial restraints placed upon him. Good on the director, though, for giving the world more Grillo: The man is one of today’s best tough-guy actors, even if he hasn’t quite broken out of the low-budget arena. Ultimately, Gibson’s presence seems more like a thing to be overcome than embraced by Carnahan, who is far more interested in calling back to the madcap days of his 2006 thriller Smokin’ Aces and its roster of collector-card contract killers. Semi-spoiler alert, but it turns out that Gibson’s bad guy is involved in all the film’s time-travel muckery in order to prevent, um, the rise of Adolf Hitler? If that weren’t overcompensating enough, Carnahan has Roy at one point yell, “That’s for the Jews!” after shooting an anti-Semitic assassin. But I guess Carnahan should earn a teensy tiny pat on the back for at least acknowledging the performer’s pariah-level presence, even in a backwards-offensive way. On that Gibson issue: Yes, I’m still puzzled as to why the uber-problematic actor keeps getting work, especially when he invests so little energy to the proceedings. The time-loop shenanigans have something to do with Roy's scientist ex, played by Naomi Watts.
